What's the process?
If your organization has never hired a grant writer before, you might be wondering how to get started. I tell anyone who asks that the process is flexible, different for each organization, and based on the needs and the budget of your organization. Here is a general outline.
- Assess the current funding, budget, and financial need of your organization. Decide on the programs or projects that need funding.
- Determine what resources your organization already has. Do you have any staff dedicated to development tasks? Do you have any staff, volunteers, or board members who will assist in the research or grant application process? Do you have a list of grants you know you want to apply for?
- Create a plan and set a budget for research and grant writing based on Steps 1 and 2.
- Research grants and other sources of funding that are a good fit for your organization's mission, programs, projects, geographical location, etc.
- Decide on a schedule for which grants to apply for, based on grant deadlines throughout the calendar year and your organization's budget.
- Write grant applications, review all materials to make sure they are accurate and complete, and submit!
